Reduce Your Stress During the Holidays

The holidays can be a time of year stressful for everyone. Some people are stressed out by the sheer volume of things that must be done, such as shopping, cooking and decorating. For others, the events with their families may cause a lot of stress. Regardless of what creates stress for you, take time to relax, to rejuvenate and relax so you can enjoy a peaceful and joyful holiday season.

If you are worried that they have too many things to do and not enough time to do it, sit down and take a Christmas to-do list. Include your spouse and children in the planning process vacation, and try to delegate chores to everyone to help make things easier and free up your time. Even the youngest children can do much to help Mom and Dad for the holidays, including picking up their room and behave. Older children and adolescents are able to do a little more. If you have a teen-age driver in your household, and have learned to make deliveries, mail Christmas cards, or wander for you.

Be realistic in your planning. If you know that you are usually takes most of the day to do your Christmas decorations, do not try to cram all in a morning or afternoon. And most importantly, do on the timetable and try to do too much in one day. Schedule in time to read a book, take a hot bath, or get to bed early.

You might also want to consider hiring a professional help during the holidays. If you know that you encounter you come from the company, but will not have time to make your household, hire a cleaning service to come and help you. Consider it a first Christmas present to yourself. Even if you just have the service to the great job and you do later, the small stuff, you will save time and effort in the process.

If spending time with the members of your extended family creates stress for you, consider bowing out of the party. After all, vacations are supposed to be peaceful and joyful. It is highly likely that if you family is in turmoil in the rest of the year that will happen during the holidays too. Try to make alternate plans with the members of your support system, such as friends or other relatives. If you attend, expect to see this strong support system to browse, and if things become strained, call one night and come home as soon as possible. It is not necessary to tolerate an intolerable situation that will cause your stress levels to skyrocket. As another level, consider donating your time in a local soup kitchen, homeless shelter or nursing home, all those who appreciate a helping hand and an ear of support during the holidays.

More importantly, listen to your body. If you start to feel the signs of stress, such as headaches, pain, anxiety and insomnia, it's your signal to slow down and take things easier. Reducing activities, ask for help with projects or chores, and take some time out for some deep-breathing exercises and walking.

If you take care of yourself, you should be able to take care of things on your list, your family and holiday season as well.
